FUCHSTHONE ORCHESTRA – PEAKS & PLOTS:
Fuchsthone’s new album, this time featuring Greek vibraphonist and percussionist Evi Filippou as guest soloist with the orchestra.

Peaks” are the deeply experienced encounters and experiences of the year 2025, musically translated by the two composers into “Plots,” their personal storylines and narratives. Like “Savita,” composed by Caroline Thon and dedicated to the young German Ukraine aid worker Diana “Savita” Wagner, who described the horrors of the war in her touching frontline blog diary and lost her life during her aid mission. Or in “Taksim” by Christina Fuchs, with field recordings from Istanbul, the chants of the muezzin and street noises as the overall soundscape of the city. It was also created during a period of political unrest when she was staying there during an artist residency. “Taksim” is the name of the central square, but it also means, beyond the location, “musical improvisation”.
Or in the intense composition “Le Champ” by Caroline Thon, based on the field theory of sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, as an appeal for a more equitable distribution of resources. According to Thon, some passages have the aggressive energy of rock music, combined with electronic minimal music, the element of words as sound, and the metallic-melodic soundscapes of Evi Filippou’s vibraphone. When composing, she also follows Bela Bartók’s theory of developing a complex musical work from a single compositional cell through continuous variation.
Christina Fuchs describes her compositional practice as a search for sound and expansion. Starting with rhythm, she develops compositional sketches that become fragments of sound collages. Layers that overlap and intertwine like events. “Every chord has a verticality for me,” she explains. Caroline Thon begins with a melodic idea that expands into an overall composition, incorporating layers of tension.
Always with the aim of taking an artistic stance on socio-political issues and continuously expanding and deepening her compositional spectrum in terms of sound. Fuchs and Thon work with dense rhythmic and melodic textures of knitted sound structures, electronics, and live sampling by computer musician and sound artist Eva Pöpplein, which they combine with big band brass sections, violin, and vocals to create a total work of art.
Expanding and transcending genre boundaries, virtuoso brass sections dive into emerging noise areas, from which solos and improvisational inner surfaces detach themselves, slowing down to a whisper, only to return to a large-scale soundscape. A dynamic of silence and the energy of explosive, brutal tutti. Masterfully lead by the two conductors, as a tonal narrative and exploration of form and material, of “Peaks & Plots”.

The FUCHSTHONE ORCHESTRA’s Reloaded #7 tour with Evi Fillipou began in Frankfurt, continued via Düsseldorf and Dinslaken to Singen, and then via Munich and Freiburg back to Cologne. It was a fantastic experience—even though it’s quite a challenge for a self-financed large ensemble that relies on cultural funding, with 23 musicians and sound engineers traveling across the country. But everyone enjoyed the tour. And the audience rewarded the growing enthusiasm with loud applause every evening.

The press wrote:

  • Real music made by real musicians.“

  • “The Fuchsthone Orchestra is on tour, this time with the amazing musician Evi Filippou on vibraphone and percussion. With new compositions by Christina Fuchs and Caroline Thon, the orchestra thrilled the audience at the Jazzschmiede in Düsseldorf..“

  • “And from Cologne, the magnificent Fuchsthone Orchestra with vibraphone shooting star Evi Philippou as special guest.“
    Süddeutsche Zeitung
  • “Rich in textures, brilliant arrangements, and soloistic highlights, the ensemble fascinates with its clear-sighted anchoring in the present and its visionary focus on the future.“

Annual Review 2024 NRW – “State of the Art” | Magazin of Kunststiftung NRW

The annual review of the Kunststiftung NRW reports about FUCHSTHONE ORCHESTRA as an example of funding:

“The Fuchsthone Orchestra is one of the most exciting ensembles in contemporary big band jazz. For five years, it has been inspiring audiences with its unique sound and incomparable energy.” (Horst Peter Koll)
The collaboration between composers and conductors Christina Fuchs and Caroline Thon results in unique works that leave plenty of room for improvisation and experimentation. This mixture of compositional sophistication and creative freedom makes the ensemble an inspiring pioneer in contemporary jazz. The Kunststiftung NRW has been supporting the Fuchsthone Orchestra, one of Germany’s major jazz ensembles, for several years.

German Jazz Award 2025 … we’re back in the game

…and in the shortlist!

The FUCHSTHONE ORCHESTRA was nominated for the German Jazz Award for the first time in 2021, when our ensemble had only existed for a year! Well, at that time we sadly didn’t win the prize, but four years later we are thrilled to be shortlisted again and among the nominees. In the meantime, the FUCHSTHONE Orchestra’s profile has evolved and refined and can certainly compete with the previous award winners: 2021: Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra 2022: Trickster Orchestra2023: Potsa Lotsa In 2024, the ‘Large Ensemble’ category was not even included in the competition, which led to some protest, so it was reintroduced in 2025. Very much to our delight, as in difficult times for the arts such as now, a nationwide cultural award is of vital importance! Not just for us, of course, this is true for the entire scene and for each individual ensemble, for which such an award means not only financial support, but above all a special recognition with radiance on the national and international stage. By the way, three other fantastic ensembles have been nominated in the category ‘Large Ensemble of the Year’, and we would also like to congratulate them here: Brigade Futur III, Carl Wittigs Aurora Oktett andSonic Interventions.

Am 13. Juni ist es dann soweit

The jury is now meeting and the winners will be announced on 13 June at the E-Werk in Cologne. In official terms: ‘The German Jazz Award reflects the social significance of jazz … and its award criteria are orientated first and foremost towards artistic aspects.’
And that is how it should be!
The jazz prize, which was established by the German Ministry of Culture, commissions an independent jury of more than 15 experts covering the entire spectrum of the jazz scene. The jury therefore consists of artists and employees of labels, publishers, clubs, festivals, agencies and the specialised press (journalists, media representatives). The fact that we have built up a good reputation in this scene will not hurt. Keep your fingers crossed for us – hopefully this time it will work out!
