Moritz Anthes, a trombonist from Essen, began playing with the Saxony-Anhalt State Youth Jazz Orchestra in 2008 and has since developed into a versatile musician, composer, and arranger. He studied at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen under Ansgar Striepens and completed an Erasmus semester with Nils Wogram in Lucerne.
As a trombonist, he performs with Jan Klare’s The Dorf and Matthias Muche’s Bonecrusher. He also released his first solo CD, *VON EINEM DER VIELE*, on Umland Records in 2021.
In his exploration of his main instrument, he focuses primarily on improvised music and alternative playing techniques. He uses various mutes, different mouthpieces, split tones, unorthodox tonguing techniques, and multiphonics to elicit sounds from the instrument that are as unconventional as possible. He also experiments with altering the sound of the trombone using guitar effects and explores experimental drone music. These specializations are particularly evident in the trio “Donaueschingen,” founded in 2020.
He has also contributed his creativity as a musician and composer to various theater and dance productions, such as at the Schauspielhaus Bochum, kainkollektiv, KGI, Toboso, and Felix Bürkle’s “starting point.” In 2019, he composed the piece *Punkt und Linie zur Fläche* (Point and Line to Plane) on commission from the Saxony-Anhalt State Youth Jazz Orchestra to mark the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus.
